UCB Math department loses grant
Vertical Integration of Research and Education in the Mathematical Sciences (VIGRE) is a program of grants
designed to increase the number of well-prepared U.S. citizens, nationals, and permanent residents in
mathematics. One of the assumptions of the VIGRE program is that declining interest in mathematics is
caused by lack of mentoring and lack of information about careers in mathematics. The UCB mathematics
department was among several that lost a VIGRE grant after a three-year review. In commenting on this,
the former chair of the UCB mathematics department said: "One of our goals is to cultivate
self-reliance . . . Berkeley is a tough place. Berkeley is not a warm and fuzzy place. Students react
to this atmosphere: Some thrive, and others don´t."
